Just under 200km from Melbourne, on the Western Highway, is the former gold rush town of Ararat, today a centre that welcomes both residents and tourists.
Today the local economy is based on wool, beef and of course, being in the Grampians, wine. The area is also home to several wind farms.
As well as several impressive historical buildings, Ararat also pays homage to the Chinese miners who struck gold here in 1857. The Gum San Chinese Heritage Centre is a must-see for anyone visiting the town.
The surrounding countryside is stunning, and includes the magnificent One Tree Hill Lookout, which affords breathtaking views over Ararat and the ranges.
