If the name of this town rings a bell, you're probably remembering your history lessons from school! For Barcaldine played a major role in the Australian labour movement and the birth of the Australian Labor Party. In fact, it was a focal point in the 1891 Australian shearers' strike and was home to the famous Tree of Knowledge until the poisoning death of the tree in 2006.
A heritage town, Barcaldine sits around 440km from Rockhampton, at the junction of the Capricorn and Matilda Highways.
It's a popular stopover with tourists and as such, boasts a good range of accommodation, shops and services.
