The second most populated area in NSW, Newcastle is a vibrant metropolitan area, at the mouth of the Hunter River, 162km from Sydney.
Best known for coal, Newcastle is the largest coal exporting harbour in the world.
It is also famous for having one of the oldest theatre districts in Australia, including the oldest purpose-built theatre in the country.
There is also a vibrant arts and cafe culture here, with a highly regarded art gallery and the active Hunter Writers' Centre.
The emerging food scene here is evident in the great restaurants, bars and alfresco cafes dotted around the city. Harbourside cocktail bars and restaurants and Mediterranean-style cafes are popular, along with Darby Street, a bohemian strip filled with with eclectic boutiques, bookshops and cafes.
