Located 158km from Melbourne and 8km south of Morwell in the Latrobe Valley, Churchill is a modern, purpose-built town constructed in the late 1960s. It began life as a service centre for Hazelwood Power Station, and future replacement for Yallourn and Morwell townships.
Originally known as Hazelwood, it was renamed after the death of Sir Winston Churchill. In fact, its best known landmark is a giant replica of Churchill's famous cigar.
The town is a popular choice with families due to its excellent facilities and services, including medical and educational, leisure centre, swimming pool and library, as well as lovely Lake Hyland, with its fishing, boating and picnic areas.
